Fishing in Ontario: A Beginner's Guide

One of the most captivating aspects of fishing is how it shifts and adapts depending on where you cast your line. Canada, with its vast and diverse landscapes, is a treasure trove of some of the most magnificent fish species in the world. From the serene freshwater lakes of Ontario to the rugged rivers of British Columbia, anglers from every corner of the globe come to experience the thrill of catching Canada’s legendary fish. Ontario, in particular, stands out with its vast array of fish species, offering everything from the adrenaline-pumping fight of pike and walleye to the finesse and patience required to land a prized trout or salmon. Each species offers its own unique challenge, ensuring that there’s always something new to discover and conquer.

Ontario is covered with many different bodies of water. Lake Ontario, one of the stunning Great Lakes, is a premier fishing destination in Ontario. With its diverse species and varying levels of difficulty, it offers something for every angler, whether you're just starting out or have years of experience. Salmon is best fished between the months of June and September, whether it's Chinook or Coho, Salmon thrive in the deeper, cooler waters of the lake, making it a prime spot for catching these powerful fish. Bass are known for their aggression, both smallmouth and largemouth bass are found in the shallows near the shoreline, particularly from May to September. Specifically, rocky areas and submerged structures around the lake are perfect for bass fishing. Lake trout are best caught from May to September as well, preferring deeper, colder waters whereas Rainbow trout are available year-round. Fishing during spring and fall provide the best opportunities for rainbow trout.

While we’re keeping the secret spots under wraps, there are plenty of well-known rivers in Ontario where anglers can reel in some serious action. The Grand River, one of the province’s longest, is a gem for both beginners and seasoned anglers. With an abundance of trout, bass, and pike, the river meanders through diverse landscapes, offering everything from easy-to-access fishing holes to remote, hidden spots for those who want to explore a little further. The Credit River, running through the charming town of Mississauga, is a prime spot for those looking to catch salmon and steelhead. With its epic spring and fall runs of salmon and steelhead, this river is a must-visit during those peak times. You can also find rainbow and brown trout in these waters. Plus, with plenty of public access points along the river, it’s perfect for urban anglers who want to cast a line without venturing too far from the city. Next up, the Nottawasaga River, a beloved fishing spot just outside Alliston, where JL Flies cofounder Sawyer grew up. The Nottawasaga offers an array of fish species, including walleye, smallmouth bass, and trout. Its calm, slow-moving sections are ideal for relaxed fishing, while the faster currents will get your adrenaline pumping. Late spring and fall are the sweet spots, with walleye and bass stealing the show during these seasons. Ontario’s rivers are a playground for every angler, from tranquil waters to challenging rapids. Whether you’re targeting salmon or just enjoying a peaceful day by the water, there’s no shortage of memorable fishing moments waiting for you.
